Anniversary Celebrations and a Summer of Singing
Welcome to the latest update from Leigh Community Choir
As the summer began, our MD, committee, and members were all working hard to prepare and rehearse for our 10th anniversary concert. We were also busy signing up for our summer sing-out events, and we had more new pieces of music in the pipeline…exciting times!
10th Anniversary Concert
Our first event of the summer was this concert which was held at St Peter’s church in June. We had a warm welcome from the people who run the church and very much appreciated all their help and support with preparations both before and during the event.
On the night we performed a range of pop, rock and folk, both full choir and small group pieces to a packed-out venue, and also had the pleasure of listening to our guest performers, Phil Makins who is a classical guitarist, and blues and folk duo The Trinity Brothers.
Our MD, Carrie, was presented with gifts to celebrate her time with the choir and not least, all her hard work both in and outside rehearsals. We also had the pleasure of having a poem written and performed by our Soprano, Loraine, who took comments from members and wove them all beautifully together to express what our choir means to us all. And, it goes without saying, there was of course more cake!
Summertime Sing-outs
Our first outdoor performance of the summer was at Pennington Park where we had been invited to sing at and support the Pride in Leigh event. This was an event with a lovely warm atmosphere and appreciative audience, one of whom has since come along to join us.
We followed this up a few weeks later with a performance at the Astley Show which was held at the excellent Lancashire Mining Museum from whom we received a very kind donation to thank us for our time, for which we are very grateful.
Our last and most spontaneous event was our flash mob at the Boathouse pub in Astley where we had been asked to pop in to sing a song or two at the start of their music festival. Once again, we were given a warm welcome and enjoyed performing for an appreciative audience.
During the rest of the summer, we have been focusing on learning our newest song, Sam Smith’s ‘The Writing’s On The Wall’ from the James Bond film ‘Spectre’. If you like the sound of that, why not come along to find out more and give us a try?
You will find details of how to contact us at the end of this newsletter.
This is a fantastic time to come and join us as we are starting some new pieces including two absolute classics, one from the musicals and the other a Take That pop anthem. The new term begins on Wednesday 10th September.

Leigh Community Choir Newsletter - April 2025

Let our 10th Anniversary Year Begin!
January’s cold weather meant that LCC had a shaky (or should I say slippy!) start to the new year as our first rehearsal had to be cancelled due to the ice and fog. However, if you think that would hold us back, then think again! We returned the following week on fine form and have been working hard throughout the late Winter and early spring to learn some fabulous new songs about which we are very excited and hope you will be to, and to continue to work on our existing repertoire.
We’ve tried some new ways of learning. Carrie and her new music team have been working with the choir on section singing (sectionals) to give each voice part the chance to learn and work together as a group before coming back together as a full choir to put together what we’ve done, and the feedback from individual members has been positive.
Back in March, we gave our first performance of the year when we supported Soroptimist International (Leigh & District) at an event they held for International Women’s Day. We sang and were also invited to have a stall to share our information and flyers. You can read more about the event at: https://www.leighcommunitychoir.org.uk/dbpage.php?pg=news
Happy Anniversary To Us
In April, we celebrated the 10th anniversary of the founding of Leigh Community Choir by our MD, Carrie, back in 2015. There was of course cake, and congratulations on our milestone came from Wayne at Wigan Council who not only looks after us so well each week at the Turnpike Centre where we rehearse, but who also had some very nice things to say about the choir and how we have grown and developed.
At the celebration, members were asked what it was that they liked about the choir and how it had made a difference to them and the response was pretty much unanimous, everyone who was asked said how warm and welcoming they found the choir when they joined, how friendly the people are, and how positive and uplifted they feel not only when performing, but also after each rehearsal. So, if you are reading this and you’ve been thinking about coming along to give us a try, but weren’t quite sure, there you have it, you will most definitely be assured a warm welcome from a very friendly and supportive group of people united by a love of music and community.
10th Anniversary Concert
Though we had a small anniversary celebration in April, we will – not unlike the king – be holding our official celebration in June with our 10th anniversary concert to be held at St Peter’s church in Leigh on Wednesday 18th June.
You can expect a varied programme of music from folk to 90s classic pop and much more. There will also be some group performances as well as special guest appearances by visiting musicians.
For more information, please see the Events section of our website, you can also find us on Facebook to keep up with all our latest news.
It doesn’t end with the concert though and you can catch us out and about over the summer at a range of local events such as Pride In Leigh, the Haigh Hall Music Festival and more. Follow us on Facebook for details and updates, or visit the Events section of our website for more information.
